You do not just pay higher wages at night. You pay again in fatigue, bad sleep, mistakes, turnover, and eventually health problems. In the UK alone, insufficient sleep has been estimated to cost around £40 billion a year in lost productivity and related impact.

I saw a simple version of this in a hostel recently. A guest books online, arrives late, and instead of getting access automatically, the receptionist has to wake up, open the door, hand over a paper with codes, then try to sleep again until the next guest shows up.

In 2026, that is not service. That is bad system design.

If the guest already booked online, why not send the access code automatically, collect the needed details before arrival, and let them check in through a simple digital flow?

That saves night labour, protects staff, and gives the guest a better experience at the same time.

Same logic applies to night transport. Fewer cars, fewer passengers, quieter roads, but we still rely on heavy old models that are expensive to run and hard on people. Europe is still slow here, but the direction is obvious. In 2026, 18 EU countries backed a joint initiative for autonomous vehicle testbeds, and companies like Bolt are already pushing this forward.

The bigger point is simple: a lot of businesses still pay people to do work that should have been designed out of the process.

That is where I usually come in. I go on site, study the customer journey, find the broken steps, and help redesign the flow so it is easier for the client, cheaper for the business, and less brutal for the people working inside it.

If your business still depends on repetitive night work, message us. There is a good chance it should already be automated.
